With a gold mining history spanning three centuries. New Zealand’s Heart of Gold is one of the most famous gold mining centres in New Zealand, and still very much a gold town.

Examples of its rich heritage are scattered throughout the town and the famous Martha Mine is still churning out gold and silver bullion today.

Get inside the fence with the Waihi Gold Mine Tours. Their experienced guides can take you inside the security fence to experience modern-day gold mining up close.

The Ohinemuri River flows through Waihi on its way to the ‘must-do’ Karangahake Gorge.

Karanghake Gorge is a key drawcard to Waihi: a fascinating and enjoyable combination of local history and natural features. Follow one of the many walking tracks to experience old mining tunnels, swing bridges, and the beautiful scenery.

Or for a slower journey, take a ride on the Goldfields Railway from Waihi to Waikato through the historic gold country.

Just 10 km away is Waihi Beach, with its 9 km of sweeping white sand. It is one of NZ’s safest and most beautiful surf beaches.
