Sponge Boat Toy

Sponge Boat Toy

Go on an adventure with this cute sponge boat crewed by cork sea dogs! This is a very easy project that turns into a fun bath toy or a summer game. Sponges are so easy to work with and so cheap! Use all the sponge leftovers as icebergs or rocks and try and dodge them in the water. You and your kids will have lots of fun creating and playing!
What you need:
  • Sponges 2 or 3 different colors
  • Scissors
  • Craft knife
  • Hot glue gun
  • Bakery twine
  • Buttons
  • Stripped masking tape
  • Toothpicks
  • Paint
  • Brush
  • Wine corks
  • Googly Eyes
  • Felt
Instructions:
Step 1:

Cut your sponge into a boat shape using a craft knife and scissors. Cut a block out of the middle, leaving the top of the boat empty. Be careful to leave a thick bottom for the boat (up to 1 inch). Use scissors to make it smooth.

Step 2

Make a cabin from a different color sponge, cutting a block that fits in the empty space of the top of the boat. Empty the inside of the cabin following the same process you did to the boat. Cut out a window hole on the front side of the cabin. Use another color for the roof of the cabin. This time cut a thin slice a little bit longer than the back top of the cabin.

Step 3

Glue the cabin on top of the boat, and the roof to the cabin top. Cut a piece of twine for the back, and then add glue and a button for each side of the boat.

Step 4

Now, let’s make a captain and sailor! Cut your felt into a beard and mustache and glue them to each of the wine corks. Glue googly eyes on the corks. Cut one toothpick in two, poke through and glue to the cork bottoms.

Step 5

Decorate your boat by painting some details in white. Make a cute flag using another toothpick and masking tape. Stick it on top of the cabin!

Step 6

You’re almost done! Your boat is already finished but it needs a crew for sailing: just stick the captain and sailor inside the boat. This crew is willing to weigh anchor!
