Wingspan National Bird of Prey Centre in Rotorua is New Zealand’s leading destination for anyone interested in birds of prey. Established in 2002, the centre focuses on the conservation, research, and education of the country’s unique raptors, particularly the threatened New Zealand falcon, or kārearea. Visitors can enjoy hands-on experiences and learn about these remarkable birds in a safe, educational environment.
Wingspan Rotorua
Located at 1334 Paradise Valley Road, Wingspan is easily accessed from State Highway 5. The centre offers a range of experiences for all ages. Visitors can explore interactive displays, watch flight demonstrations, and take part in behind-the-scenes encounters. Wingspan is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 11 am to 1 pm.
The centre plays a crucial role in conserving New Zealand’s birds of prey. Through breeding and release programs, Wingspan supports wild populations of kārearea and rehabilitates injured birds. The team also carries out research to understand population declines and develop strategies for long-term conservation.
Bird Shows NZ
One of the highlights of Wingspan is the Flight of the Falcon show. This unique demonstration showcases the agility and speed of New Zealand falcons as they soar and swoop, often reaching incredible speeds. The display also demonstrates falconry techniques used for rehabilitation and conservation, giving visitors insight into the skills and care required to work with these birds.
In addition to falcons, Wingspan features other native birds of prey such as the morepork owl (ruru), swamp harrier, and barn owl. Each display is designed to educate about the role these birds play in New Zealand’s ecosystem.
School Visits/Tours
Wingspan offers tailored educational programs for schools and groups, giving students the opportunity to learn about conservation, falconry, and the important ecological role of birds of prey. School group visits include entry to the Flight of the Falcon display, where students can experience an engaging and educational live presentation featuring New Zealand’s birds of prey.
School visit packages are affordably priced and designed to align with curriculum learning outcomes. Entry includes access to the Flight of the Falcon display, while additional experiences such as guided tours, behind-the-scenes access and Meet & Greet encounters with raptors are available by prior arrangement and subject to availability. Meet & Greet experiences are limited to small groups and may have minimum age requirements. Teachers and group leaders are encouraged to enquire ahead of time to customise a visit that best suits their students.
Wingspan
Wingspan also offers visitors the chance to support conservation. Memberships, donations, and sponsorships help maintain and develop the centre’s facilities and programs. Gift vouchers for experiences like Flight of the Falcon are also available, allowing families to enjoy a unique outing while contributing to the protection of these birds.
The centre’s commitment to Māori heritage is reflected in its focus on the kārearea as a taonga. Birds of prey feature prominently in Māori culture, symbolising strength and vigilance. Wingspan incorporates this cultural significance into its educational programs, connecting visitors to the broader history of New Zealand’s natural world.
