Things to Do in Christchurch with Kids
Willowbank offers a range of activities that keep children engaged. In the farmyard section, toddlers can hand-feed alpacas, llamas, and miniature ponies. Native bird aviaries display species such as tui, kea, and kaka, while the nocturnal house ensures guaranteed kiwi sightings. Exotic animals, including lions, tigers, and lemurs, add variety and excitement for older children.
The reserve’s on-site café serves hot and cold food, including kid-friendly meals such as pancakes, sandwiches, and lunch boxes. Families can picnic in designated areas or relax in the café before or after exploring the park. Highchairs, baby changing facilities, and mobility support are available to make visits more comfortable.
Willowbank’s wildlife hospital offers visitors a chance to learn about animal rehabilitation and conservation in action. Volunteers and veterinarians care for native and wild species, educating guests on how the reserve supports nationwide predator-free initiatives and endangered animal breeding programs.
For special events, the Willowbank Barn and Farmyard provide a rustic venue for birthday parties, corporate functions, or weddings. Guests can hire the barn or use the outdoor barbecue and picnic areas, combining wildlife, culture, and cuisine in one location.
