The International Antarctic Centre

The International Antarctic Centre

The International Antarctic Centre in Christchurch is a one-of-a-kind destination for families, school groups, and visitors of all ages. Located right next to Christchurch Airport, the centre offers an engaging and educational experience that brings the icy world of Antarctica to life, without ever leaving New Zealand. Since opening in 1992, it has become a major attraction offering an engaging and educational experience to educate and entertain.

Antarctic Centre Christchurch

Christchurch is one of just five cities worldwide recognised as a gateway to Antarctica. The International Antarctic Centre capitalises on this, providing insight into Antarctic geography, history, and the scientific work conducted on the continent. Visitors can experience real snow and ice, survive a simulated summer storm, and learn about life at Scott Base. The centre is part of the working campus for New Zealand’s Antarctic program, giving guests an authentic glimpse into the logistics, research, and challenges of living and working in one of the world’s most extreme environments.

Experiences at the Centre

One of the centre’s highlights is the Penguin Rescue and Backstage Experience, where visitors meet the Kororā Little Penguins and see the daily work involved in keeping them healthy. Guests can also ride the all-terrain Hägglund, a specially designed vehicle used in Antarctica, and enjoy the Storm Experience, a simulated summer storm that gives a sense of Antarctic weather. Other attractions include the 4D Theatre, Antarctic Gallery, and husky encounters.

Younger visitors can take part in the Penguin Keeper Program, where children aged 10–13 assist with feeding and caring for the Little Penguins. School holiday programs also introduce children to Antarctic life through interactive, educational activities.

Birthday Parties and Events

The International Antarctic Centre is a popular venue for children’s birthday parties. Parties last around 2.5 hours and include experiences such as the Hägglund ride, Antarctic storm, penguin interactions, and themed food. Packages start at NZ$605 for six children and one adult, with additional guests charged separately.

The centre also caters to corporate events, gala dinners, cocktail functions, and Christmas parties. Unique Antarctic-themed spaces for up to 600 guests, combining interactive exhibits with fine dining options.

Dining at the Centre

Visitors can enjoy a unique dining experience with the Breakfast with the Penguins event, where a continental breakfast is served alongside an informative talk on Antarctic wildlife and the Little Penguins. Regular café facilities offer hot and cold meals, snacks, and drinks for families visiting the centre.
