Skateland
Skateland Roller Skating & Sports Rink in Auckland has been a popular destination for generations. From its early days as a classic roller disco to its current vibrant, laser-lit rink, Skateland is great for families, beginners, and experienced skaters. There are public skating sessions, or take part in specialised clubs such as artistic skating, speed skating, and inline hockey.
The rink is designed for everyone, with a beginner area for those just starting out and a main rink for more confident skaters. Sessions run every weekend, with Friday night family skating, Saturday and Sunday public sessions, and school holiday programs that keep children active and entertained.
Skateland hosts birthday parties, school holiday programs, and community events. With four party rooms and flexible booking options, families can celebrate special occasions with skating, games, and entertainment.
The facility also caters to sporting enthusiasts. Inline hockey provides fast-paced action and develops skating and stick-handling skills, while speed skating and artistic skating offer opportunities for competitive and recreational skill development. Skateland supports skaters at all levels, from beginner to international competitors.
How to Do Roller Skating
Roller skating is accessible for all ages and can be enjoyed casually or competitively. Beginners should start on a flat surface, preferably in a controlled rink like Skateland, to build balance and confidence. Always wear safety gear, including a helmet, knee pads, and wrist guards, which Skateland provides for hire if needed.
Start by standing with feet shoulder-width apart and slightly bent knees. Practice small steps and gentle pushes to glide forward, keeping your weight centred. Turning is achieved by leaning slightly in the desired direction while maintaining balance. For stopping, learn the proper technique depending on your skate type: quad skates often use a toe stop, while inline skates rely on a heel brake or controlled drag.
Skateland offers Learn to Skate classes most Saturdays, providing expert guidance for beginners and those improving their skills. Classes focus on balance, safety, and skating techniques, helping participants gain confidence in a supportive environment. After mastering the basics, skaters can progress to fun activities such as dancing on skates, playing inline hockey, or joining artistic or speed skating sessions.
