Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa is at the top of NZ’s geothermal attractions, offering a mix of relaxation, recreation, and alpine scenery.
Located in the Hanmer Springs Village, the complex features 22 pools, family-friendly activities, spa services, and a long history linked to the region’s natural thermal waters. With temperatures ranging from 32°C to 42°C, visitors can choose from a selection of freshwater pools, therapeutic hot pools, rock pools, and private bathing options.
Hanmer Springs Hot Pools
The hot pools are the main drawcard, each offering different temperatures, layouts, and experiences. The Cascade Pools reach up to 42°C and provide quiet corners for unwinding. The sulphur pools sit above the complex and feature volcanic rock cladding inspired by the region’s geology. The AquaTherapy pools incorporate jets and water spouts designed for muscle relief, while the hexagonal and rainbow pools offer consistent warm temperatures within sheltered garden areas.
For families, the freshwater pool, lazy river, and activity pool are a hit. Children eight and under have dedicated spaces such as AquaPlay, featuring slides and climbing elements.
The complex also operates private thermal pools for those wanting a quieter setting.
These rooms feature European-style wooden interiors and views into small private gardens. Sauna and steam suites are also available and can be combined with pool entry.
Hanmer Springs
Beyond the water itself, the site has a long history and strong ties to the community. The area’s hot springs have been known for generations, with local Māori referring to the thermal area as Te Whakatataka O Te Ngarehu O Ahi Tamatea, meaning “where the ashes of Tamatea’s fire lay.” Archaeological evidence shows that travellers once passed through the region en route to the pounamu trails.
Public development began in the late 19th century, and the pools have remained community-owned since 1883. Today, guests benefit from modern facilities, including upgraded changing rooms and a loyalty program for frequent New Zealand visitors.
Water used in the pools begins its journey as rain and snow on the surrounding mountains before seeping two kilometres underground. Over around 173 years, it warms naturally before reaching the surface through fractured greywacke rock. This process gives each pool its mineral content and temperature.
Spa Thermal Park
The Spa at Hanmer Springs complements the pool complex with a wide selection of treatments. It offers facials, massages, body therapies, and couples’ packages, with options ranging from quick enhancements to longer restorative sessions. Treatments incorporate cosmeceutical skincare, body wraps, and scalp therapies, and bookings can include access to private pools, sauna suites, or steam rooms.
Guests can choose packages designed for different needs, such as pregnancy-safe treatments, longer relaxation rituals, or dual treatments for two people. The spa’s approach focuses on creating a calm environment. The wider complex also includes the Tea Kiosk Café & Grill, known for its casual dining and wood-fired pizzas. Outdoor seating provides views across the alpine setting, giving visitors an easy place to refuel between activities.
