Te Wairoa was established by the Christian missionary in 1848 as a model village, but survived for fewer than 40 years before it, and the nearby Pink and White Terraces were obliterated by the eruption of Mt Tarawera.
Whether you are here to take in the relics and interactive stories of The Buried Village Museum, walk the archaeological site or waterfall trial, there is an activity, or combination of activities to suit all ages, tastes and preferences.
With so much to take in, be sure to come prepared and make the most of your time exploring a historic and monumental time in our recent history.
Rest in-between activities in our well appointed tearooms. Nestled in tranquil native bush, it’s the perfect place to enjoy Devonshire Tea while the kids’ burn off excess energy in the adjacent playground. And why not satisfy your retail urges in our gift store.
At the Buried Village there is something for everyone.
