Taupo Bungy is one of the adventure activities in Aotearoa’s central North Island, offering a direct leap from a cliff-top platform overlooking the Waikato River.
Located only five minutes from central Taupō, the site combines height, speed, and a striking geothermal setting. The 47-metre jump is New Zealand’s only cliff-top bungy, placing visitors out over clear blue water before the countdown even begins.
On-site facilities include a check-in area, merchandise, and instant photo and video packages optimised for social sharing. The experience generally takes around one hour from arrival to completion, with all guests required to check in at least 15 minutes before their booking time. Minimum age for the bungy is ten, and jumpers must weigh between 35kg and 140kg.
AJ Hackett Bungy
Taupo Bungy is operated by AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand, a company widely associated with the development of commercial bungy jumping. With operations dating back to 1988, the team is known for strict safety standards, detailed procedures, and highly trained crew.
Before jumping, visitors are asked to declare any medical conditions. Some conditions require a doctor’s certificate, while others may prevent participation entirely. The operator cannot permit jumping for anyone who is pregnant or who has photosensitive epilepsy. Prescription safety glasses are available for those who wear glasses but cannot safely use their own during the jump. Clear information regarding risks, weight requirements, and medical restrictions is provided at check-in and online. AJ Hackett Bungy also offers the Taupō Swing at the same location.
Swing
The Taupō Swing offers an epic, adrenaline-filled experience over the Waikato River, right from the same cliff-top platform as the bungy. Participants can swing solo or tandem, reaching speeds of up to 70 kph while soaring through the air on a 44-metre (144 ft) arc. This North Island-exclusive swing provides an alternative thrill for those who want a high-flying adventure without a free-fall rebound. Spectators can also watch from the riverbank viewing deck.
The experience also includes photo and video packages. For those looking to combine adventures, the swing is available in combo deals with the bungy, perfect for trying both activities in one visit. On-site facilities also include a shop for souvenirs and snacks at the riverside base.
Bungy Jump
The bungy jump at Taupō begins on the cantilever platform, which extends far out from the cliff edge. This design allows a clean launch and uninterrupted view over the river. Jumpers can choose between a forward fall, a backward fall, or a simple step off the edge. Tandem pairs are also welcome, provided their combined weight does not exceed 180kg and the difference between their individual weights is within 30kg.
Those wanting a water touch must request it during check-in. Because river levels and environmental conditions vary, crew cannot guarantee a dunk, but they will attempt it when conditions permit.
The jump is quick, but the lead-up and rebound provide a solid adrenaline surge. Once the jump is complete, crew on the recovery boat detach the cord, and visitors take a short ride back to the riverside base. Photo and video packages are available immediately, captured from multiple camera points.
Bungy Jump Taupo Deals
Taupō Bungy offers standard rates for adults and students, with occasional promotions depending on the time of year. Combo deals are available on-site, allowing visitors to pair the bungy with the Taupō Swing at a reduced combined price. These combinations are popular with groups, as they allow participants to complete two activities in one visit.
Group bookings for ten or more people can be arranged through the operator’s group enquiries team, with tailored quotes for corporate events, education groups, and other organised outings. The team also assists with planning for large groups, ensuring check-in times and viewing space are managed smoothly. Photo and video packages can be added to any booking, with instant delivery available.
