WHAKATANE

Located an hours drive south of Tauranga is the cultural hub of Whakatane and the quintessential nearby beach town of Ohope.

Ohope Beach has a 10km sandy beach, a small village like atmosphere and is perfect for camping, surfing, walking, playing on the beach or just hanging out with the family.

Whakatane is well known for its great weather, excellent fishing and friendly locals.

Some of the attractions around the area include the museum, an observatory and Maori historical sites. The Nga Tapuwae o Toi walkway leads to pasites of major historic significance, native forest, costal views, seabird colonies and forest birds every where.

You can also take a dolphin or seal cruise during the warmer months and there are guided kayak tours around Ohiwa Harbour and nearby Whale Island. Take the kids to Maatatua to discover the extraordinary story of the New Zealand’s most travelled meeting house. The legends of the Ngati Awa tribe are brought to life through world-class digital technology.

Whether you’re looking for an action packed family holiday, or to relax on New Zealand’s best beach, do as much or as little as you choose in the Bay of Plenty.
