Ruapehu - As the halfway point between New Zealand’s two largest cities, you can drive inland from almost anywhere in the North Island and you’ll
end up in Ruapehu.
At the southern end of Lake Taupo and in the heart of New Zealand’s North Island, Ruapehu is halfway between Auckland and Wellington, just a 4-hour drive from either city.
The Ruapehu region is defined by the three volcanoes that stand sentinel over a landscape of tussocked desert, rivers, lakes and native forest.
Today the volcanoes are part of the World Heritage site, Tongariro National Park, New Zealand’s first national park. The centrepiece is the snow-capped Mount Ruapehu, alongside the two smaller cones of Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro.
