SUMMARY:Kiwi Month Night Walk
DESCRIPTION:As part of kiwi month\, the Whakatāne Kiwi Trust is running a special night walk in October. Wrap up warm\, grab a torch and explore the REAL Whakatāne Night Life scene with the Whakatāne Kiwi Trust! \nCome along and learn about our local kiwi population and the work being done by our amazing volunteers to protect our national icon and other native taonga. If you listen carefully you might even hear the call of kiwi or weka! Birds aren’t the only stars of the show though\, you’ll also discover various plant life\, nocturnal creepy-crawlies like spiders and wētā\, and incredible glow-in-the-dark fungi!\nPlease be aware that it is very unlikely that you will see a wild kiwi on this walk – they tend to run a mile when they hear a dozen humans coming down the track! \nDirections to the meeting point on Burma Road: \nFrom Whakatāne: Drive over the hill from Whakatāne towards Ōhope. Approximately 400 metres after the turn-off to the cemetery\, turn right onto Burma Road. Follow this road past the old landfill site and park in the turning circle at the end of the gravel road. \nFrom Ōhope: Drive over the hill towards Whakatāne. Approximately 800 metres after the turnoff to Kohi Point lookout\, turn left onto Burma Road. Follow the road past the old landfill site and park in the turning circle at the end of the gravel road. \nPlease note that a reasonable level of physical fitness is required as we will be going off the public tracks and this may not be suitable for children under the age of 8. Whilst the Trust team will have first aid kits\, please bring any personal medication you may require (e.g. asthma inhalers). Finally\, don’t forget to wear warm clothing and footwear (e.g. NOT sandals or jandals) and bring a torch\, some snacks\, a drink and a camera! \nCancellation Policy:\nDue to limited ticket numbers\, we request all cancellations are made at least 48 hours before the scheduled walk. This gives us the opportunity to fill your space with another member of the public.\nCancellations made within 48 hours or more will be processed with a full refund. As part of the Whanau On Wheels program\, in addition to the Ebike\, BMX and Scooter that can be won\, we will also have a selection of second hand good quality adult bikes available to give away to members of the community.\nFull Cycle Bikes are checking them over for us.
