Love the great outdoors? Then you’ll love what Taupo has to offer!
The township and the surrounding area of Taupo is a haven for walkers, hikers and mountain bikers. With the largest lake in New Zealand running into narrow river gorges, a cool thing to see around here are the dramatic rapids and waterfalls. The geothermal activity also creates natural hot pools to relax in.
Make sure you visit the AC Baths
AC Baths is an all-weather, family-friendly pool complex that provides hours of entertainment for visitors and the community. The state of the art facilities include a large outdoor leisure pool with two toddler areas, two 25-metre lane pools, an indoor learn to swim pool, two hydroslides, a tarzan swing, four private thermal mineral pools, a sauna and a café. All the pools are thermally heated using natural hot water, promising a relaxing and enjoyable day out for the whole family.
Open daily, 6am to 9pm (Closed Christmas Day).
The Edge Rockwall Taupo
If a day in the water isn’t for you then make sure you check out our all-weather adventure climbing wall for new to advanced climbers. Standing 12 metres high the wall is a fun and challenging activity for all ages.
The climbs are graded from 12 to 25 and are constantly changed so the challenge never ends. Top rope and lead climbing are available. We also have a bouldering section along the bottom of our wall for low level climbing for those who don’t want to go too high but still want to give climbing a go.
There’s no time limit on a visit to the Rockwall, so come early to make the most of your time! Please note: You must bring a belayer to climb.
Walk along the Waikato River starting in Spa Park, which has a natural thermal spring to relax in, and ends at the mighty Huka Falls.
You’ll enjoy a relaxed river walk in between. There is nothing like watching more than 200,000 litres of water plummet through the narrow gap every second.
Biking is one of the most popular things to do in Taupo amongst tourists and locals alike. Craters of the Moon is considered the best spot for mounting biking, with 50 kilometres of tracks overlooking stunning views of Lake Taupo and the Waikato River.
Skiing and other outdoor pursuits, like hiking and walking, are another reason to come to the area, and the Taupo town centre is crammed full of pubs, cafes and interesting shops. The area has a load of accommodations to suit all budgets.
A day spent exploring some of the local art galleries and museums is a great way to learn about the region’s history and heritage.
At Taupo Museum, you can view unique displays of Maori cultural artwork and experience the awarding winning Pure Ora Garden alongside.
Whatever your pace, you’ll find Taupo has something to interest everyone!
