Hop on-board with the White Island Tours crew on the luxury cruiser ‘PeeJay’ for a 5 to 6 hour journey to investigate the country’s lone functioning water volcano – White Island. Located 49km off the coast of North Island, this is one of earth’s most reachable volcanoes. With most of the volcano submerged under the water, we can disembark straight into the crater complex – there’s no mountain climbing needed! As a live volcano there is no doubt that White Island is home to the country’s most exciting geothermal attraction. Visitors may get close to booming steam vents, gurgling mud pits, hot volcanic streams and the astonishing lake of sweltering acid. The intense tones of yellow and orange come from the profuse sulphur on the island. This make’s it a sight for sore eyes; you’ll need to capture this with your camera! Professional leaders will take you on a 1 – 1.5-hour investigation of the inner crater, supplying intriguing commentary on the island’s geology as well as tales of efforts to mine sulphur. As well as volcanic and geothermal structures, you will see the remnants of the sulphur factory, which has survived countless eruptions since being deserted in the 1930s. Once you re-board, there may be an opportunity for a swim off the boat before you receive a yummy lunch, which can be eaten while observing the outer walls of the island where Pohutukawa forests flourish and huge Australasian Gannet colonies live. Our trip home usually offers the chance to see dolphins, whales and other aquatic creatures. What a way to end an extraordinary day! We hold the required government licences to interact with these creatures.
